Pharmaceutical solvents – The importance of quality continuity and supply

The contribution solvents make in the production of medical products is frequently overlooked, instead the focus is often concentrated on critical intermediates, excipients, additives, and API’s (active pharmaceutical ingredients). However, solvents account for 80-90% of the volume throughput of raw materials in a typical fine chemical process. The role they play in ensuring production plans stay on target and deliver the finished product on schedule is critical.

Impurities should be minimised or eliminated entirely

Due to the large volume of solvents used within pharmaceutical processes, (for example API production) quality issues are as a result magnified. It is therefore essential that impurities are minimised, controlled or eliminated entirely in the solvents used. Solvents manufactured to anything less than the tightest specification and with the lowest possible impurity profile will inevitably lead to production disruption and even site downtime in the worst cases. Pharmaceutical companies require supply-chain partners that can not only provide a continuous uninterrupted supply of product but with a consistent and reliable level of quality excellence.
